Single-Cloud vs Multi-Cloud Solutions

For the longest time, businesses have searched for the right single-service cloud platform that best suits their needs. Today, the dialogue has moved from single-cloud to multi-cloud solutions. A typical enterprise in 2022 has used six cloud computing services on average, and over 80% of companies have adopted a multi-cloud strategy.

There are many reasons for this trend, such as reducing single point of failure (SPOF) events, improving flexibility, and accessing vendor-specific capabilities. Is a multi-cloud solution best for your business? This article will examine some pros and cons of multi-cloud versus single-cloud practices.

Single Cloud Solutions

A single cloud solution is an implementation of one cloud provider for all data management services. According to Gartner, the three top cloud service platforms are Google Cloud PlatformAmazon Web Services (AWS), and Microsoft Azure.

There are several noted benefits of a single-service cloud strategy, such as:

  • Simplicity
  • Compliance
  • Accountability

Proponents of single-service cloud platforms note that it simplifies everyday operations and reduces technical complexities. Relying on one cloud provider for all functions, applications, and processes makes overseeing tasks and synchronizing management easier. Companies that operate within strict, regulated industries may employ this strategy: Certain vendors may better address specific regulations and unique compliance concerns. Accountability is also a benefit - you’ll know whom to call if there is an issue with the service provider.

There are several disadvantages to using a single cloud vendor; however, some companies believe that having your eggs in one basket increases the possibility of a single point of failure (SPOF) event and opens them up to other security risks. Additionally, being a “captive audience” can be unappealing and may make you vulnerable to rising costs.

“The most cited reason for employing a multi-cloud platform approach is security. It is believed that using multiple platforms provides redundancy for better disaster control. Segregating your infrastructure through multiple clouds may improve your operation’s integrity.”

Multi-Cloud Strategy

Multi-cloud strategies are becoming more and more attractive to many companies. Why? There are several reasons:

  • “Modular” flexibility for greater functionality
  • Lowered costs
  • Security

Using multiple cloud services provides companies with the flexibility to access vendor-specific capabilities. You’ll benefit from each platform’s strengths when implementing a “modular” approach to cloud management. For example, AWS is known for its rapid deployment, agility, and automated solutions. Azure offers Linux support, business-ready services, and the ability to work with vendors. On the other hand, Google has valuable data analytics and orchestration abilities.

This “best-of-breed” strategy allows companies to access the best services from each platform for greater functionality.

Multi-cloud services can also reduce overall costs — cherry-picking cloud services based on prices can lower direct expenses. Although it is appealing to negotiate the best costs for specific services, some say that reduced costs may be ineffective due to the additional training needed to operate within a multi-cloud environment. Since multi-cloud work requires multi-cloud experience, staff would need to train themselves on how to operate within multiple platforms (at additional cost).
